When you are pretentious you try to appear more important, intelligent, and greater, than you really are. You want people to think that you are intelligent, great and important, though you may not be all that, if you are pretentious. A person is pretentious they make claims to some importance or distinction.
- He is being just pretentious; that's all. He is not as great as he tries to appear. He just wants to impress others with a show of greatness, which he does not have.
- Sharon is a picture of modesty. Though she has topped the class, she is not pretentious like some others who try to seem greater than they really are.
