lie flat on one's stomach with the face downward
When you prostrate you lie flat on your stomach with your face to the ground, especially in the act of worshipping God or to show your obedience to someone. We prostrate in temples as an act of worshipping the deity there. In the olden days people prostrated before their kings and rulers; that is, they showed their obedience to the rulers by lying flat on the ground with the face down.
- He prostrated before the deity in the temple for offering his prayers. As he lay flat on his front his face too touched the ground, and though his clothes got soiled he did not mind it.
- He prostrated before the king asking for forgiveness. The king let him lie on his front like that for a few minutes and ordered him to rise, and not to make the mistake again.
