When you rationalize your action, you try to invent a reason or explain it so that it appears to be right, at least not as bad as others think. You rationalize a thought if you find or try to find a logical reason to explain it. In short you justify it.
- He knew that he was hasty and thoughtless in ordering the visitor out, so he tried to rationalize it by arguing that the visitor looked threateningly at him.
- She felt she was correct in marrying a man out of her race, and did not care to rationalize it to any one. She didn't try to explain her action to any one.
