When you rebuke someone, you scold them severely, some times in public. When a court rebukes an organization it makes strong comments against it and the way it carries on its activities. A parent rebukes a child if it misbehaves, that is, the parent scolds the child for behaving badly.
- The teacher rebuked the pupils for not doing the assignment properly. She scolded them for their neglect.
- The court rebuked the police for excessive harassment of the prisoner. It totally disapproved of their treatment of the prisoner and strongly criticized the police publicly for it.
